A year ago, she came in seventh place in the 50m at the Pan American Games in Argentina.

Did you know- In the 70s,Lorna Forde became the best-known Olympic athlete when she finished third in the women's 400m, behind Joyce Yakubowicz (Canada) and Debra Sapenter (America), at the VII Pan American Games in the United Mexican States. Later on, at the XXI Olympiad, held in Montreal (Canada) in July 1976, Miss Forde failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

The literacy rate is one of the highest in the world at 95.6% while the life expectancy is put at 63.

History and Governance

The country's history can be traced back to the first landing of Christopher Columbus, who is said to have landed on San Salvador, an island in the south of Bahamas. Many of the locals were enslaved and deported to Spain and the area was largely deserted until the arrival of the British who set up settlements in the region. The islands then came under the British Empire. Following the American Revolutionary War, the African slaves in the USA who had fought on the British side, in the conflict were expelled and were resettled here by the British. The country became internally self-governing in 1964 and fully independent in 1973. While Kenya culture has evolved to encompass Western, Asian and Arab influences, it still retains a distinctly African identity. Examples of the dominant forms of language, dress, food, music and dance illustrate this point well.

Languages in Kenya

Although well over 40 dialects are spoken in Kenya, the languages that enjoy national appeal are English and particularly Swahili. So, even though the local languages are spoken widely in their respective tribal areas, it is a good idea for the visitor to the countryside to learn a few phrases in Swahili.

Typical Dress

While educated and affluent Kenyans have adopted the Western style of dressing of business suits, jeans and t-shirts, many communities have remained true to their traditional gear.

The world-famous Masai and Samburu continue to dress in brightly checked sheet wraps (called shukas) and lots of earrings, necklaces, armlets and bungles.

The Ogiek, a hunter-gatherer community whose ancestral home is the Mau Forest, dress primarily in hyrax skin. That said, unlike other countries such as Nigeria and Rwanda, Kenya does not have a national dress and several attempts to come up with one have proved unsuccessful. Traditional wear in Kenya therefore varies from tribe to tribe.

Kenya Food

In the food arena, many rural Kenyans continue to eat the food that their ancestors did. The Luo relish their fish and millet, the Kikuyu their irio (Irish potatoes, peas, maize and greens mashed together) and the Masai's diet consists of meat, blood and milk.

Admittedly, Pilau rice, chapatti and samosas which are borrowed from Asia, are delicacies at the coast. In addition, chips and deep fried chicken are served at many eateries around the country. However, these are not quite as popular as ugali and nyama choma. So if Kenya has a national food at all, it has to be these 2.

Ugali is a maize (corn) flour cake that is baked over an open flame while nyama choma is barbecued meat, typically goat, beef or lamb. This is often eaten with kachumbari, a spiced tomato, onion and chilly relish.

Dance and Music

Music and dance are important components of Kenya culture and are mostly performed at important ceremonies such as weddings and initiations. The nature of Kenyan music and dance also varies from region to region.

The Luhya's music is fast-paced and integrates different beats concurrently. The Luo dance is more measured with the dancers following the rhythm of the nyatiti, a traditional lyre.

Along the Kenya coast, Taarab, which betrays Arab and Indian influences, is popular. It is sung by women who slowly and elegantly gyrate from side to side with a belly dance. They are often accompanied by an Arab drum and beat.

The Masai dances performed by men culminate in a jumping contest with the higher one is able to jump, the better he is. Costumes and props such as masks, shields and spears are vital aspects of most of the dances.

Kenyans are famous for their passion for song and dance. A popular music genre called benga, which fuses Kenyan and Western influences, is popular in nightclubs around the country.

However, the traditional villages dotted all over the country are the best places to experience authentic, unedited aspects of Kenya culture. Talking at a conference in Stafford, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson spoke about the potential of the games: "Never underestimate the power of the Olympics and Paralympics, they have the power to inspire and unite." The legacy of the games will give people greater access to more sports and exercise facilities and will help to change people's lifestyles: "Young people will grow up witnessing the ambitious 2012 Olympic and Paralympic vision becoming a reality."

Dame Tanni expressed her belief that in order to get the best out of the games people needed to start acting now. Shropshire is already using the Olympic Games as a platform to deliver many social and economic benefits. David Hinves, South Shropshire District Council's Sports Development Officer, has started a scheme to help inspire and develop local athletes: "I decided to invite nominations annually for those athletes who are intending to be at the London 2012 Games and identify the ten who are closest to achieving this dream." These "Talented Performers" are receiving financial help to improve their training and are acting as local role models to inspire others. Utilising the Olympics to get more young people active will have a positive effect on society. Sport acts as a way of teaching people responsibility and helps them to be more disciplined. Also it can help to reverse the trend of an ever increasing obese population.

Andrew Jones of All Stretton is one of the talented performers identified. At just 16 years of age he has finished in the top five positions at numerous events on the Under 20 men's section of the 2005 athletics season: "The Talented Performers Scheme has encouraged me to think about the games in 2012. As part of a Shropshire group that is looking forward to the games, it is giving me something to aim for. The scheme has acknowledged my achievements to date and given me the confidence to go forward and aim higher."

Ben Carless from Wistanstow is another local young person benefiting from the talented performers scheme. He has captained the Welsh under 16 hockey team and the games are acting as a real inspiration for him: "The Olympic Games are inspiring me to try and achieve success at the highest level. Of course, it is my dream that one day I will become part of a GB team at the Olympics. It gives me and other athletes a great target to aim for."

Other benefits for Shropshire won't be seen until nearer the time of the games. However, Mr Hinves has already made sure plans are being put in place now to make sure Shropshire is in a position to maximise them: "We have already been involved (that is in the sports world along with our tourism colleagues) with identifying potential benefits of these games."
It is estimated that tourism will account for 50-75% of the net benefit of the games. Not many people know that the origins of the modern Olympics stem from Much Wenlock.
